What To Look For In The Best Chromebook For Seniors In 2023?
Before you take out your credit card and get the next Chromebook you see, spend some time in finding what aspects are important to four seniors in their Chromebooks.
Before you even go any further, you need to make sure that if your parent or a grandparent is comfortable with the Chrome operating system.
If they are used to Windows or Mac operating systems, then a shift to chrome OS might not be as smooth as one might think. The chrome operating system is quite different and they may not find some features that they are very used to.
If they are okay with the Chrome operating system, then, by all means, you are free to find the next best Chromebook that is for the seniors in your house.
There are some factors you should consider before getting a Chromebook for your parent or grandparent.
Display
The display is probably the most important feature for old people.
Elderly people might have a problem with their eyesight which means you need to give them the absolute best display so that they can see what’s on the screen without having to try too hard. A good screen will also protect their eyes which is definitely helpful.
We would recommend going with a full HD display as it comes with enough pixels to give you a sharp image and text. There are millions of pixels on the display and as a result, you will enjoy the sharpness in the image quality.
Make sure that the color quality is vibrant and not dull. If the display comes with an IPS panel, you are guaranteed good, vibrant, and true-to-life colors. With an IPS panel, you can view the contents of the screen from anywhere in the room without any color deterioration.
The contrast ratio of the display is also important. With the right contrast ratio, you will be able to see millions of colors accurately. A good contrast ratio would also give you perfect blacks and super bright whites which will present you a range of colors for your viewing experience.
Whether you want to touchscreen depends on your senior’s needs. If he or she wants a touchscreen, then there is no harm in getting one. If we are not sure about getting a touchscreen, then avoiding one will save you some bucks.
How big of a display do they want? If your senior needs a huge display, then you can go for 15.6 inches from books. But if they don’t worry about the size of the screen, then you probably should get them a 13.3-inch laptop as it is the most common size available.
Processing Power
Elder people do not require a lot of processing power, in most cases. But if you have someone who is used to having a heavy routine, then you might want to get them a laptop that is quite powerful.
Chromebooks, usually, do not come with a lot of processing power. This is because users are expected to use web-based applications and not stand-alone applications that require a lot of power.
Most web-based applications and android applications run well with the processors that Chromebooks come with. You will probably get an Intel Celeron or animal series processor which does a pretty good job in most of the cases.
For memory, 4 GB of RAM should be more than enough. Pretty much 95% of the Chromebooks on the market come with this memory on board. As Chrome OS is optimized for memory management, you should be able to do more with this 4 GB of RAM.
Design
If you are a senior yourself, you don’t want a laptop that is heavy and huge. Having a heavy laptop makes it difficult to take it along with you from one place to another which is why we always recommend portable laptops for seniors.
When you think of a portable laptop, it should come with a display size of 13.3 inches or smaller. This size is perfect as most laptops in this category are around 3 pounds in weight and are easy to move around with.
You also want to make sure that your laptop is durable. Most books that are cheap come with a plastic build. Some of them are studied but the rest of them are quite weak and can easily get damaged. If you can, go for an aluminum build as it is more durable and can handle physical damage as well.
Whether you want a simple laptop or two-in-one convertible laptop, it depends on your needs. If you are going to use the Chromebook for media consumption and streaming videos, we recommend going for a two-in-one convertible laptop.
If you are going to write or do some office work on this Chromebook, we recommend going for a regular Chromebook instead. This will be easier to use and can also save you some money as it doesn’t come with some fancy convertible features.
Battery Life
Battery life is another very important component of a senior’s Chromebook.
When you get a Chromebook with good battery life, you can simply pick up the device use it for your everyday activities, and charge it at the end of the day. This is exactly why we recommend going with laptops that have all-day battery life.
If you can’t afford a Chromebook with all-day battery life, make sure the device comes with at least 6 to 8 hours of battery life so that you can charge initially. This is very important for people who travel a lot as you won’t have charging boards everywhere.
For those who don’t travel a lot and have access to a PowerPoint all the time, battery life is not as important. You can charge your devices any time but we recommend charging it only once a day to optimize the battery’s performance as long as possible.
Connectivity
For a modern laptop, Chromebook should come with all the essential ports and connectivity options.
You need to have at least one USB type C port on your Chromebook to transfer data at an express pace. The presence of an HDMI port would definitely come in handy when you have to hook up your laptop to a much bigger external display.
Having an SD card gives you the advantage of additional storage as well. Chromebooks do not come with a lot of storage as they are mostly dependent on cloud storage. The presence of an SD card slot allows you to increase the local storage to up to 400 GB which is nice.
Regarding wireless connectivity options, your Chromebook must have 802.11ac or 802.11ax Wi-Fi connectivity. This Wi-Fi connectivity will get you very high internet speeds without the need for any wires. Most Chromebooks also come with Bluetooth built-in so that you can connect external devices easily.
That’s curtains for this post.
We have given you enough to find a good Chromebook for the elderly in your family.
If you still aren’t to zero in on one, then do let us know and we’ll get in touch with you to find out the best ChromeOS device for your loving senior.
